What Everyday Measures I Can Take To Cure My Insomnia?

A common type of question doctors hear every day is usually something to do with how to fall asleep and stay asleep without resorting to sleeping pills. Some doctors are quick to prescribe a medication to help patients fall asleep. This may provide a temporary fix to this problem but also may become a large problem as the patient may become dependent on the drug, which will soon become less effective. People tend to do more harm to their bodies by trying to force themselves to sleep, which can result in the reserve effect.

Mineral and vitamin deficiencies can play a large role in the lack of sleep you may be experiencing. Asking a medical professional about options to give your body a high level of required supplements can decrease the effects of insomnia and in some cases even completely cure it. The eradication of body toxins by detoxifying your body can increase the natural relaxation to encourage sleep. By eating well-balanced meals you can help to improve overall general health and lower anxiety levels in your mind, promoting sleep and relaxation.

Another important factor is taking notice of environmental stresses such as traffic, sounds, lights, people and pets which may delay or disrupt sleep. These factors do not always fully wake the sleeper up but can cause a change in the deep sleep called REM sleep. This is enough to cause insomnia as the person may wake up still feeling groggy. When light enters into the room as you sleep, it can cause your brain to think it is time to wake up, causing you to be a restless sleeper. Noises that may be caused by other family members, such as snoring, restlessness or talking in their sleep will also rob you of your much-needed sleep.

Consider the amount of caffeine, nicotine and alcohol you consume, especially close to bedtime, as it can act as a stimulant. Caffeine can cause restlessness and delay sleep and some people are much more sensitive to caffeine than others. Nicotine causes light sleep to occur but can trigger awakening due to withdrawal. Alcohol, even in small amounts, may make you fall asleep but usually affects deeper sleep by preventing your from going into REM sleep, which is where you actually get the benefits, because it alters the chemicals in the brain that trigger the various sleep stages. Over the counter drugs often contain stimulants and caffeine that with continued use could severely affect the ability to sleep. Diet pills and "energy drinks" are typically the worse offenders as stimulating medications that can be directly linked to insomnia.

Insomnia can be managed and even cured by following some simple advice. Taking a good, honest look at your lifestyle, exercise levels and what you eat during the day can often be the first step in getting control of sleepless nights.
